My Students

Do you remember falling in love . . . with reading? Most of my students have not yet discovered the utter joys a book can bring them, but they are in for that discovery with Monster.

My 120 students are stepping into high school at our inner-city 9th grade academy.

As they embark on the first few weeks of public high school, they excitedly share they dreams with each other and myself. Many of them dream of college, families, great jobs, a nice house to live in. Due to repeated years of attending poorly-resourced schools, the reality is that their reading levels are drastically behind what's necessary to graduate high school - let alone be accepted into college. If their reading levels stay where they currently sit, my students will struggle to support themselves, not to mention a future family, or fuel a college career. But YOU are the hope for these eager, dedicated learners.

My Project

Walter Dean Myer's Monster is a novel about Steve. Steve is a 16 year old teenager accused of homicide. He spends his days in jail documenting his trial and story in his journal. Steve uses his skills in film to record the events in the form of a film script. The format intrigues 9th graders and segues into later drama units. In addition to active reading strategies, and applications of literary terms, my scholars will also engage in debates and activities about morals, life choices, personal identity, and destiny vs. choice. Not only will the novel expand their vocabulary and literary skills, but also stretch their articulation skills and lead to essential self-reflections about choices they make. Each student will get 50+ post it notes. They will use the post-its to 'annotate the text.' Text annotating is a skill exhibited by good readers and successful college graduates.

By providing them with an exciting, engaging, relatable, and thought-provoking novel, their interest in reading will increase.

An increased interest means an increased practice. And increased practice, means increased growth. Increased reading growth means they have a fair shake at their dreams.
