This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

My students are creative and invested in pursuing different art forms. I teach 6-8th grade in a P-8 school; where my students take select arts courses in addition to core academic classes.

Our students come to us so they can express themselves in a more creative way than what is possible at a traditional school.

We believe that practicing the arts is a fundamental part of developing children's minds. I strive to provide an environment where students are comfortable to express themselves.

My Project

Extended exposure to fluorescent lights, like the ones used in schools, can cause headaches, eyestrain, and stress/anxiety. To make matters worse, my classroom is windowless. With no natural light to work with, comfortable lighting is a struggle in my classroom. I strive to find alternative lighting strategies to reduce the negative effects of the constant fluorescent lighting in the school. I use fairy lights around my boards and lamps around the room, but it isn't enough light for the students to be able to see comfortably at their desks.

By donating to our project, not only will you be helping to improve students' health, you will also be helping students to stay calm and have a more positive experience in school.

It is important for kids to learn to control their emotions throughout the day, and providing a calm and relaxing place for the students is half the battle.

The LED desk reading lights that I am requesting prevent light flicker and negative radiation and allow the students to set the light to suit their needs. This helps the students to take ownership of their own learning.
