Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am an 8th grade Social Studies teacher at a Title 1 school in a community where the family median income is $12,000. We have 90% of our students qualifying for free/reduced lunch. Our kids do not get many opportunities to enrich their lives with art and historical places. Greenville is a historic county with a downtown area filled with monuments dedicated to different eras in history.
I would like my students to be able to take a tour through our downtown area and view all of the monuments that have been dedicated to different historical eras. During the walk, students will be able to take pictures of the monuments and gather information on different historical events. After the trip, the students will read and write about each monument. The writing aspect will allow my students to take the learning aspect further.
When each student completes the reading and writing analysis, they will have the opportunity to make their own monument commemorating a historical person or event using clay. I will give each student a pound of clay and they will decide how to mold, shape, and display their own interpretation of a historical person or event.
I believe the opportunity to experience their own communities will give them a chance to reflect about why history is so important. The opportunity to sculpt will allow them to realize they can mold, shape, and image their own lives and others.
