My Students
My classroom is filled with eager and ready to learn first graders! I have built and fostered an environment where kids can feel safe and loved. Our school is not located in the safest part of the city, but our school has provided a safe place for our kids. We have Saturday and Sunday recreational activities that provide a safe place for kids to play.
Although these children come from all aspects of life, it does not define who they can become.
I have students that come from shelters, programs, single family homes, farmworker parents and foster care. Although they have many obstacles in their life, receiving a proper education is not one of them.
My Project
In common core standards, we don't start teaching our kids money until they are in second grade--but why wait? I want my kids to be informed consumers and understand the concept about buying things they need versus wants. I have established a money system in our classroom. The kids received money for doing their classroom job, showing up on time and showing great work ethic. As in the real world there are things you need to pay like breaking the rules and buying things for yourself.
On Friday afternoons, I want to start incorporating money centers and activities.
One center will be our classroom store that is ran by two students. They are in need of a cash register to help give the feel of a store. I also want to provide a wallet for each student to be able to put their money and stay organized. The monopoly, the allowance game, the game of life and puzzles are a great way to teach kids about money and help reinforce those subtraction and addition concepts--especially getting them ready to do double digit addition and subtracting in second grade.
