Money Smart in Second Grade

My students need games and books about financial literacy to get them started early when it comes to understanding how earning, saving and spending money works. They also need play money for our behavior incentive system.

My Students

I recently started new adventure teaching second grade at a new school. My new school is part of a smaller school district with a close community of staff that work tirelessly to provide for the academic, social, and emotional needs of all their students.

I am teaching a group of 17 second graders that come from diverse cultural and economical backgrounds.

Two thirds of our school is considered low income. Because of this, many students may not have access to a consistent supply of reading materials at home.

My Project

My students learned about money before I took over their class mid year. This project would provide vital materials for my students to practice and reinforce their counting and working with money skills independently during math centers. Games like Monopoly Junior and Allowance can teach my students to be money smart and can be fun and engaging at the same time. Books about money can be checked out during ELA block to reinforce their money smarts in a different way.

I am also asking for play currency that I intend to use for our in class behavior incentive.

Students can earn realistic money, spend, budget and save for rewards like Sitting By a Friend or Silly Socks for the day. Handling money in these ways can set them up with the basic financial skills they will need as they grow up and reinforce the second grade skills they need.
