Money, Money, Money, Money (Sing It - You Know You Want To)
My students need money resources to assist in everyday learning that will help them work towards using money, exchanging money, using receipts etc. independently in the real world- a skill all my students will benefit from.
My school is a center based Autism Impairment school that services 32 different school districts in our county focusing on the individual needs and severity of what Autism may bring to the table.
First off, my students are amazing young men who offer the world far more than what their disability labels them as.
My students are 14-16 years old who cognitively function between a 1-3 year old. My classroom focuses highly on daily living skills and how to self regulate behavior and sensory needs. My students are all non-verbal and are working towards using pictures or communication devices to express their wants and needs.
We focus on bath rooming needs as my kiddos are all but one still in pull-ups/diapers. We focus on personal hygiene and daily living skills like brushing their teeth, washing their hands, cleaning up after themselves, wiping tables, vacuuming etc. The goal is to decrease the number of prompts, physical or verbal, to work towards functional independence. We also work highly on skills related to money, community signs and community helpers as they will help the kids in the real world the most.
My Project
Money knowledge is such an important skill to have. A large portion of the school year will be geared toward money. The magnetic money will help with group table work with myself or other staff as well as individual work with staff. The stickers and stamps will help students by allowing them to work with coins independently or with staff. I will be allowed to come up with different money amounts to allow for a wide range of different instruction. The puzzles and games allow for not only learning money but working on social skills, following directions, turn taking, basic concepts, sitting at the table, waiting their turn, and a natural setting for language. The wide range of supplies I've picked will meet the range of my various students current levels and needs.
My students will benefit from the resources I have selected in more ways than just basic understanding of money.
Money knowledge will assist in working towards my students being able to use money in real life situations such as at the store or a restaurant. This will not only help them become independent in money in general but will assist them in social skills, communication, confidence and overall life skills.
