If you look around my classroom you will rarely ever see activities or lessons being done using paper and pencil. My students can not write (yet, we still try very hard) so most to all of our activities involve activities or lessons being done on laminated card stock. My students are working on basic level skills which include a lot of adapted books and activities that involve matching or activities that they have to velcro a piece for the answer. Adapted books is how we do a lot of our lessons. I print on card stock (that I buy), laminate and bind the adapted book together and the kids follow along as I read a page and they have a picture to match to the correct page. We teach my kids daily skills, vocational skills, math, ELA, sexual health, and behavior skills all using laminated adapted books. They repeat a lot, to all, of the activities they do over and over again in order to generalize and master that skill. My classroom is filled with adapted books that my students actually like to do (which is a huge accomplishment) which assists in their goal of coming to the table and doing an activity for 3-5 minutes. I have one student who will go over to our adapted book library get a few and do them independently. Coming from a kid who at one point had a goal to come and work at the table for more than 1 minute, this gives me all the happy feels! These adapted books need to be laminated in order for the students to do them. They also have goals to use materials appropriately (not rip materials which is done daily) which is another reason we need so many laminating sheets in my classroom.
