My students need these molecular modeling kits to be able to see how the larger biomolecules are assembled. Our current kits only allow for them to build a few small molecules.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I have found that students learn best when they are doing hands on activities, or are able to "see" what we are talking about in class.
This can become exceedingly difficult when talking about small things, such as what different molecules look like.
My students are curious, and for many of them this is their first true opportunity to "do science." I want to continue to foster this curiosity by giving them as many opportunities as possible to work with the things we are discussing.
My Project
Biological molecules can be very difficult to picture, which can make it difficult for students while trying to understand what is happening at the molecular level.
Three dimensional structures need to be seen in three dimensions.
Our current paper diagrams are just not as helpful for visualization.
The molecules that can be built with these molecular model kits are specifically designed for building the larger biological molecules that my students are discussing on a daily basis. They will be an excellent resource for students to use and refer to while exploring photosynthesis, cellular respiration, DNA replication, and even the transport of materials through the cell membrane.
