My Project

My students attend a public school designed to address racial and socio-economic segregation in Hartford and the surrounding suburbs of central Connecticut. Our goal is to provide high-quality STEM-themed education for all students grades preK-5.

I am a former Art teacher who is creating a weekly specials class called Design where students learn computer science through a creative lens.

I utilize a variety of high- and low-tech resources to try to communicate ideas about computational thinking and problem solving. Much of what we do is either on screen or completely "unplugged". I am hoping to incorporate cubelets as a way to bridge that gap: tangible, reusable objects that interact with one another to based on who children combine them together.

Cubelets are a unique tool for getting kids to think about the act of engineering in terms of inputs, processing and outputs. The interchangeability of the cubelets is great for getting kids to think about modular design, which is a frame of mind that is transferrable to so many other areas. The variety of sense blocks allow us to address the idea of cybernetic technology that responds to its environment.

The ability to use cubelets with lego bricks also opens possibilities both for lego integration and creating 3D printed elements of our own that can attach to the adapter pieces. I foresee creating kinetic sculpture and other robotics projects, but really the best thing about cubelets is that they don't do just one thing--they lend themselves to an endless stream of innovative possibilities.
