Modernizing Shakespeare!

My 30 students need a class set of "Shakespeare Made Easy: Romeo and Juliet" to introduce my students to Shakespeare's dramatic plays.

My Students

Say the name "Shakespeare" to a classroom full of 9th-grade English students, and you are guaranteed to hear a chorus of moans and groans. It doesn't have to be like that. I believe you can get students motivated to read Shakespeare and, dare I say, understand it... maybe even like it.

Everyday my math classroom - located in an impoverished, high-need area of North Carolina - is filled with 86 of the most amazing scholars that a teacher could ask for.

Unfortunately, we have large class sizes and keeping all students engaged and responsible for learning is a major obstacle. Drama is a highly tested subject on their state exam at the end of the year. However, because my students are on average 2 years below in reading, they have never learned to enjoy reading and engage themselves in books, especially Shakespeare.

My Project

Many of them have never heard of Shakespeare. Many of them have never left their small rural town. The drama unit of Romeo and Juliet is there only chance to explore another time period, culture and faraway place. In so doing, they will open their horizons while growing in their reading levels. With a set of 30 in my classroom, the students will always be able to use this resource as often as they need. We also do many assignments and projects that involve students using Shakespeare's words in their writing. This would open up an opportunity for students to have more of these assignments and improve their understanding of Shakespeare's vocabulary. Shakespeare writes about many obstacles students are facing or will face in their lifetime. If the fear of Shakespeare's language is removed, students will be able to appreciate the themes and lessons they can learn from his writing.

If I had a class set of "Shakespeare Made Easy" so that each student would have the original and translation right in front of them, we would be able to understand and discuss the play at a deeper level and they would not be so intimidated by the difficult language.

By instilling a love of Shakespeare in my students hey will gain an understanding of literary allusion in other literature, since Shakespeare is one of the most referenced authors in all of literature.
