My Project

Year after year, writing is the hardest subject to teach for many teachers. Students tell us that they hate writing. Teachers see that the areas of style and conventions are routinely troublesome in the classroom. We teach grammar out of a grammar book but students can't carry over that learning to their writing. We know what we're doing isn't working but how do we fix that? Welcome Mentor Sentences! Mentor sentences provide students the opportunity to discuss, learn, and apply grammar and craft skills presented in well-written sentences from mentor texts that are already used in the classroom.

I started this strategy over a year ago and the students fell in love!

They loved reading amazing stories and pulling out well-written sentences to analyze and discuss. They get so excited to edit those amazing sentences and attempt to model their own writing after well-known authors. Research has shown that this strategy improves student style, grammar, and mechanics in writing. And they love it! It's a win-win! Now that I have the routines built, please help me get these awesome books into the classroom.
