My Students

Students in today's society are faced with many more challenges, and as a high-ability teacher in a low-income/high-poverty school, I feel the need to eliminate some of the hurdles in order to show my kids they are capable of accomplishing anything!

Despite the many difficulties they face, my students come to school every day, ready to be challenged, grow in their knowledge, and be loved!

I encourage my students to find solutions when they struggle, to use additional resources available to them to assist with their learning, and continue to grow the skills, experience, and perseverance they will need in their lives both inside and outside of the classroom. Being able to add an additional resource to my classroom that will allow differentiation and support for all students would be invaluable.

My Project

Many of my high-ability 8th graders, struggle with limited background knowledge for the novels and literature we read. The more I can visualize the text and bring it to life, the more they challenge themselves to persevere in their reading. My 8th graders will read To Kill a Mockingbird at the end of this school year. This story is a timeless classic, but for my middle-school students, there are many challenges to overcome before we even begin.

Due to the mature content, time period, and social issues raised in this classic story, a newly released graphic novel will support, not replace, each student's experience in reading this classic piece of literature.

For many, knowing they have a graphic novel to reference when they don't understand a segment of the reading will be eliminating one of the challenges before we even begin. The graphic novel will also provide a resource to use in comparing the novel to the graphic version. Students will be able to distinguish the changes between the original story by Harper Lee and the 21st-century adaptation of this timeless story. The power of a picture is sometimes all they need to understand and imagine the events taking place and immerse themselves in the pages of the story.
