Putting a book in the hands of a child can make a powerful difference, and putting a book in a home library can impact even more lives. At Lynhurst, 90+% of our students qualify for free lunches, so it is easy to see that money is limited and books are not a necessity to have at home. Not only do I want my kids to read, but I want to put the book in their home as well.
I have found that when a student owns a book and takes it home to grow his or her library, the story is read by others in the family and the student takes pride in being the "expert". Building literacy confidence with middle school students leads to more enthusiastic learners. After reading Tears of a Tiger, the first book in the series, my students are eager to read Forged by Fire.
With Sharon Draper visiting our school in May, I can not wait for each student to have their own book signed by this wonderful author. I know this will leave a lasting impact on my students and create a memory they will treasure forever.
