My Students

My students are driven, creative, and thrive on hands-on learning. The performing arts allows my students to perform, design, and create in a real-world setting, putting on plays and musicals for audiences of over 500 people. However, of all content areas, I believe the performing arts have been affected the most by COVID19. Performances have been changed, postponed, and/or cancelled, which devastated my students. Once schools opened back up, performance students have been required to perform with even more restrictions: using singers masks, distancing more because they are singing, and smaller audience sizes. However, through it all, they never let the restrictions affect their morale.

My students are incredibly resilient.

On top of the pandemic and the hardships that has caused, our junior high school was badly damaged from the March 2020 earthquake. The building was so damaged in fact, we have been displaced into an elementary school while our district rebuilds the junior high.

Junior high school is usually the first time that students are able to perform in a large auditorium with amazing lighting and sound systems. This opportunity, however, was taken away from my students and I want to be able to give it back to them!

My Project

Independent from being able to produce a live show, students will be able to get practical experience with stage lighting. Students will explore lighting basics while designing for specific moods or atmospheres by installing and operating stage lighting units.

Lighting affects our everyday lives and it is important for technical theatre students to understand these basics, even if we cannot put on a live show due to COVID restrictions!

Each student will create their own designs while learning how to safely hang and focus stage lights. This practical application lighting cart will give them the hands-on learning experience they crave and deserve.
