WE is a socioeconomically diverse school in a Title I district.
My second grade students are avid readers whose favorites are Mo Willems' Elephant & Piggie books and Brad Meltzer's Ordinary People Change the World biographies.
Using the tools at our creation station, my students design and build suspension, arched, and beam bridges as a part of our science curriculum.
As second graders, they are very active and they love when I incorporate PE games like banana tag as breaks between subjects. They don't even mind turning into a banana when they get tagged and they await their classmates coming to unpeel them!
Being that Mo Willems is, hands down, my favorite author, I have the entire 25 book Elephant & Piggie collection and have shared it with my second grade class. Well, my students cannot get enough of Mo Willems and they are clamoring for more of his books!
A prodigious (and prodigiously successful) children's author and illustrator, Mo Willems books appeal to both early and advanced readers because they capture relatable behaviors and emotions.
For four struggling readers in my class in particular, Mo Willems has transformed their relationship with books. As they independently and partner read his books, they have improved their fluency and have started earning AR points for the first time. When their reading levels grow beyond the Elephant & Piggie books, having a familiar author will help bridge them to other books and series.
By helping to supplement our classroom's Mo Willems library, you will be introducing my students to new series like his Pigeon and Knuffle Bunny books and new characters like Edwina the Dinosaur and Leonardo the Terrible Monster.
