My students are middle class urban students who have no connection to the food they eat!

We are based in an urban, Montessori, high school in Minnesota. My students are intelligent and loving. They are open to new ideas if the ideas are presented to them thoughtfully and well.

My Project

I have the opportunity to teach an "occupation" to my students for many years in the fall. Occupations are classes that take into account the entire workings of a system. We will be focusing on food and the sustainability issues surrounding our current urban food system. We need 20 copies each of Omnivore's Dilemma and Animal, Vegetable, Miracle to gain insight into food sustainability. While reading Animal, Vegetable, Miracle by Barbara Kingsolver we will be learning how to make fresh, nutritious foods from local, organic farmers. While reading Omnivore's Dilemma we'll be looking into and learning about the environmental effects of our current food system. In the end, students will have the knowledge and abilities to change how they eat in small ways or big ways. Students will also be cooking for our student body, enabling the entire school to learn about eating locally and organically.

This project is so important.

Our current food system is not working. We are degrading our bodies, our environment, and our communities for ourselves and our future generations. If we can start in schools, teaching children, about the change, we can help them understand that they can make a difference in small ways.
