Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

My MLL/SPED students are curious, energetic, and full of potential! It is important to learn academic skills, but it is also important for children to manage emotions, interact with others, and navigate the world around them. Many of my students benefit from extra sensory support throughout the school day, and I love watching them grow in confidence when they are given the tools they need to feel safe, calm, and successful.

I am working to create a sensory-friendly room that can support both my special education students as well as my multilingual learners.

The sensory resources in this project will provide opportunities for calming, movement, tactile exploration, and emotional regulation in a safe and welcoming environment.

For example, the sensory toys and stress balls can help students relax when feeling overwhelmed or need to keep their hands busy. The weighted blankets and plush sensory toy will provide comforting deep-pressure input that helps students regulate emotions and feel secure. The writing spacers as well as guided reading highlighters will help students isolate and focus on their English skills. The wiggle seats will support children who need movement to help organize their bodies and improve focus. The sensory, animal mats, and gel floor pads will encourage tactile exploration, visual tracking, and sensory engagement that support self-regulation and attention skills.

The clipboards, Band-Aids, storage bins, mental health posters, and class decorations will help students develop coping strategies, improve focus, and return to the classroom ready to learn. Most importantly, they will help children feel understood, supported, and included in our school community.

This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
