I am so fortunate to teach middle school - an age group that embraces life at full speed. There is not an hour that goes by where I am amazed at the insight, curiosity, and humor brought to learning life skills by my students. My goal is for the students to feel comfortable and knowledgeable with skills they will use for the rest of their life.
Home Arts students use school supplies that go beyond paper and pencils - pot holders, cookie sheets, needles, spatulas, refrigerators, a washing machine, basically everything you use in your home.
This course is a series for firsts for many. Cracking an egg, being a smart consumer, ironing clothes, using a sewing machine, successfully making pizza from scratch, well, this list of the Home Arts skills I cover could go on for pages.
My Project
“It’s fun to get together and have something good to eat at least once a day. That’s what human life is all about – enjoying things” ~ Julia Child
Innovative food labs give students the chance to communicate, interact, apply the lessons from their core classes, and enjoy things without the societal pressures they currently face in many areas of their lives.
Julia Child's quote describes how I want students to feel in the Home Arts class. The process of creating food can be a very social experience. The Kitchen Aide mixers are user friendly and a tool to make our lab time more efficient and less stressful. The students will work in kitchen groups to make a recipe focusing on each of the different food groups using skills learned in class. For example they will make pizza dough from scratch when studying the grains food group.
The Kitchen Aide mixers serve as the foundation for this grant opportunity. The mixer attachments and cake decorating supplies bring the STEAM to our food labs. Kitchen science and math uses the curriculum from their core classes and applies it to making something you can eat! We often think of technology as computers, but there is a lot of technology used to design a mixer that can also make pasta. The students will learn how technology advancement has made the Pasta Roller and Spiralizer a reality for home cooking. We will have food labs centered on using the attachments. Cake decorating combines the science of baking with the creative artistic component of presenting food. We will learn how the glorious examples students see in the media is engineered to look the way it is presented. With this knowledge, the students will learn how to transform a basic cupcake into a work of art.
