Mixing Up Science

My students need one KitchenAid Artisan Series 5-Quart mixer for Food Science classes.

My Students

My Food Science students learn about healthy eating habits and proper nutrition. Students conduct experiments to learn about nutritional food composition and food safety. My goal is to educate the next generation of consumers to make healthy choices. My class teaches personal responsibility.

My classes are high school students in grades 9 - 12 from a rural background.

Many students live on farms or are closely related to agriculture. A majority of the students receive assistance through the school lunch program. Learning about healthy eating habits and food safety is a big issue, important not only to the students, but their families. The students have been able to share what they have learned to help their family members improve their nutrition. The Food Science classes teach students about where their food comes from, how to grow healthy food options, and how to utilize what is grown. In addition, students learn about food preservation methods and food safety. Classes maintain raised bed gardens and grow some of the food used in projects for class. The goal of the classes is to train students to make an impact in the community in the future.

My Project

My students will use the mixer to assist with food preservation labs, such as canning and fermentation. They will also use it when preparing foods for food safety labs. Students combine different ingredients and conduct bacterial growth studies. They can then analyze and make comparisons based on ingredients. Students will also use the mixer for science projects in sugar crystallization, enzymatic browning, emulsions, studying leavening agents, analyzing nutrient content, and creating thickening agents.

This donation will provide additional opportunities for students to apply the science concepts they are learning in class.

The hands-on activities they will conduct will put their knowledge to practice and provide more meaningful learning. This will result in lasting change.
