This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

The students at Diaz are truly the best! As a Title I school we were fortunate enough to receive a grant to pay for an after-school program called NEST in which over 100 students are exposed to tutoring and extracurricular enrichment that they would otherwise not likely receive. Working in a Title I school means working with 100% of students living well below the poverty line. I will be teaching a mixed media art class in the enrichment program which incorporates history, recycled materials, and a variety of techniques to help my students express their emotions through creativity.

What makes my students special is their eagerness and desire to learn.

I would describe the staff and students at My school as a family outside a family. We all collaborate to make our students' education the best it can possibly be by going above and beyond the teaching standards.

My Project

During this NEST program, students will learn to write and read cursive handwriting ( it is no longer taught in K-12 education). This is a dying art form which students will incorporate into their art and other life opportunities. Many students cannot read certain historical and fictional texts without knowing how to read cursive writing.

They will also learn how to recycle everyday items, that would otherwise be thrown into a landfill, to create beautiful, and meaningful works of art.

The materials we will be using are canvas, mod podge, and gesso. The mod podge is a glue that we will use to adhere recycled materials and handmade paper to the canvas. We will be studying a variety of techniques by famous artists. The gesso will be used to create depth and texture while also using a variety of other mediums.

With a few simple supplies, they will learn techniques that they can later apply to other creative and academic projects.
