This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I am lucky to teach art to every student in the building which adds up to more than 500 students in a high-poverty public school. This includes First through Fifth grade classes, including bilingual classes and self-contained special needs. We are 85% low income, so all of our students receive free breakfast and lunch daily. Our school is located in a predominantly Spanish-speaking community with 50% of students being English Language Learners and 80% of students speaking Spanish at home.

My Project

My students are in need of basic mixed media art supplies to enhance the current art program. I am hoping to teach texture using a variety of items my students can touch. Some of the items I am requesting are cotton balls, sponges, and felt. With these items students will be able to feel the items and describe their textures.

Each item will be incorporated into a different lesson plan for each grade level.

This will allow for all students to experience tactile texture through a variety of projects. Some examples of the projects I will teach includes using the cotton balls to make clouds, felt to create three-dimensional monsters, and pipe cleaners to create standing mobiles. These items will add an additional elements to their projects and increase learning.
