Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
"This is the best day ever!" I promise I'm not exaggerating when I say I've heard this a few dozen times this year. Whether my students exclaim it during a hands-on math activity, reading about mammals, or while zooming cars off ramps in order to write a lab report, it's clear they LOVE to learn.
My second graders are a hard-working, fun-loving, kind-hearted bunch at a Title I school south of Seattle.
Representing cultures, languages, and regions from around the world, they bring so much joy and curiosity to our classroom!
My Project
My students are learning how to be their best selves! We need books to teach my students about empathy, tolerance, diversity, growth mindset, and kindness! Our titles include The Invisible Boy, How to Potty Train Your Monster, Fill a Bucket: A Guide to Daily Happiness for Young Children, Chocolate Milk, Por Favor: Celebrating Diversity with Empathy, Beautiful Oops!, Bucket Filling from A to Z: The Key to Being Happy and more. These books will provide them examples from which to grow and characters to whom they can relate. All of this will help my students grow into their best selves.
By learning how to make mistakes, show empathy towards others, and treat everyone with kindness, they will learn as students AND as humans.
By reading about characters who are empathetic, kind, accepting, learning from mistakes, and more, my students too will begin to emulate that. Many of my students are first and second generation from Mexico, Vietnam, Guatemala, and Somalia. With such a diverse classroom, my hope is to foster a community that is safe, welcoming, and warm for all.
