Mississippi Delta Literacy - Fostering a Love of Reading

My students need 25 copies each of 4 book titles - "The Tale of Despereaux", "Tuck Everlasting", "Gold Cadillac", and "Because of Winn-Dixie".

By the 4th grade many students have given up on reading because all they are asked to read in school are from boring basal selections. I want to bring the love of reading back to our students! I teach 4th grade reading and language arts in a small town in the Mississippi Delta where I began six years ago with the Teach for America program. The community is extremely high needs, 100% of the students are minority, and 98% receive free lunch.

Most of my students have experienced very little in their life beyond our small town. Books are, for some of my students, their one way to experience the world! But, by the 4th grade, many of these students don't see reading as interesting, exciting, or relevant to their lives. The reading basal, or short segments of stories, is the only reading curriculum available to teachers in our school. These selections are often disengaging and don’t heighten the imaginations of our students.

I would like to bring to my school several class sets of novels that are rich in vocabulary, imagery, and sensational ideas that will “hook” our students onto reading while expanding their horizons and imaginations. These books will be for 4th grade teachers in our school to use throughout the year and will be used along with interesting and detailed reading comprehension and vocabulary activities for each chapter that I have already created!

Your donation will ensure that the 4th graders in a small town in Mississippi are able to experience a world beyond their own and will, maybe for the first time, find pleasure in reading. It will make such a difference in their lives today, and will hopefully inspire them to become lifelong readers in the future!
