This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I have taught 2nd grade for five years and spent one year as the math specialist for grades Kindergarten- 5th Grade. This coming year, I am so excited to meet my students and see the array of different cultures, abilities, talents, and traits that will highlight my classroom.
Every school year, I begin by making sure my classroom includes 3 important characteristics: safe for all learners, bright and eye-catching (for student engagement), and comfortable.
My students should be able to come to class each and every day and be excited to learn, comfortable to expand their minds and think outside the box (environmentally and socially speaking), and feel safe enough to open up and be a creative thinker and sharer.
My Project
In order to prepare my students for the middle school, it is crucial that they take the fundamental skills and strategies learned in elementary school math along with them. This includes fractions, decimals, multiplication and division, coordinate planes, and other essential components of the 5th grade math curriculum. Please help my students master the math standards designated for 5th grade in order to prepare them for middle school math. In order to create an atmosphere of cooperative learning, I need essential materials such as bulletin board paper, group containers and bins, whiteboards, folders, sentence strips, chart paper for anchor chart development, and math center activities.
In order to best prepare my students, I also want to ensure that they spend their days of growing and learning in a warm and welcoming environment.
