I teach in a rural town in the heart of central Illinois. My students are diverse, unique, and very special to me. As children with special learning needs, my students struggle on a daily basis, academically and socially. Despite the trials they face in the classroom and at home, they never stop persevering to learn, grow, and become a successful member of their local and school community.
My students are AWESOME, and I am constantly in awe of what they teach me.
With that, I want to be able to give them the hands down best educational experience because, well, they truly deserve it!
My Project
This year my school has decided to implement an exciting new reading intervention program. The Benchmark Assessment System (BAS) is used to determine a student’s independent and instructional reading levels. Using this system, teachers can observe a student's reading behaviors, engage in meaningful conversations in regards to comprehension, and make informed decisions about instruction that is tailored to each child's specific academic needs.
Furthermore, my students will be engage one another in purposeful conversation, and they will need a workspace that allows for them to practice the skill of active listening.
With a kidney table in my classroom, my students will not only be able to work more closely with me and improve their reading, but their social skills and ability to interact with their peers will also greatly benefit, with the hope that they become a productive member of our school community.
The additional tables will be used to promote the use of technology to research and further students' knowledge of various subjects/topics.
