This year my school has implemented a new reading intervention program called the Benchmark Assessment System (BAS). BAS is used to determine a student's independent and instructional reading level, and it allows teachers to make informed decisions about instruction which is specific to each child's academic needs. Students also engage in purposeful conversation with one another, and require a workspace that allows for active listening to be practiced. With a kidney table in my classroom, my students will be able to work closely with me, during instruction, to improve their reading, and their social skills/interactions with peers will greatly benefit. All with the hope that they become a productive member of our school community and classroom. The additional tables will be used to promote the use of technology to research and further develop students' knowledge of various subjects/topics.
