Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Sometimes it is the smallest things that can make a huge difference. For a foster kid or homeless student, a pencil is that thing.
My students come to school every day to learn and grow.
They win national writing awards and make beautiful art work, despite being from one of the highest poverty communities west of the Mississippi. Everyone in my class reads, writes, and speaks, every single day. Only, it's hard to get the writing done without something as simple as a pen or pencil.
My Project
I am asking for 1,700 golf pencils and even more erasers so that every student can participate every day, no matter what happened at home or in the class before. While this number may seem extreme, our pencil sharpener gets a workout every day as we draft, revise, and draft again in our room. Students make mistakes and every now and they they want their work to be pretty, so some erasers and pens will help us make it through the year in style.
These basic needs make our classroom a functional place.
In a year, teachers really do buy many, many pencils and erasers. We know the realities of working in a neighborhood without a big-box store nearby and we need to make sure everyone can keep up, especially our most at-risk kids. We need your help to get there.
