Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Project

At the beginning of each school year, we discuss books as mirrors, windows, and sliding glass doors in our school library. These lessons give students an opportunity to focus on finding a book where they can see themselves, as well as books to help them look into the lives of others. Books offer so many great learning opportunities about ourselves and others in an engaging manner!

Students are more likely to become engaged and read books where they can relate to the characters or subjects.

Whether this is relating to the book through stories their ancestors told or because the main character has the same hair texture as they do, students should be able to find themselves represented in the school library collection! This has been an ongoing effort over several years to improve the representation of all students in the books available.
