My Students
Currently, there are 9 students in my classroom, all with various special needs, all with similar wants and desires. These students are diagnosed with severe intellectual and physical disabilities and we refer to ourselves as the Super Scotties.
Our school has an incredibly positive atmosphere and the Super Scotties are supported, included, and loved by their non-disabled peers.
The Super Scotties have many peer buddies who volunteer during school to accompany and mentor them throughout the day. These typical developing peers are not only a safety net for our special population, but also positive role modeling for appropriate social behavior. Our student body is filled with supportive, compassionate and hard working students who help each other reach their goals. Most students at our school come from disadvantaged backgrounds, but they do not let that stop them from doing their very best in everything that they do in life.
My Project
Our classroom is a very busy place where students are learning functional life skills throughout the school day. A very important aspect of this education is learning about personal hygiene and grooming. While we do have a restroom and sinks in our classroom suite for students to practice these skills, they were not built with any mirrors.
Unfortunately, is it extremely difficult to teach a student how to clean their face and style their hair when they are not able to see what they are doing.
Having mirrors in our restroom area for over the sink, at wheelchair height, and individual tabletop will completely solve this problem and ensure that all students are able to complete daily hygiene and grooming activities adequately.
