Mirrors and Windows through Dystopian Stories!

Help me give my students the continued literary spark of wonder & empowerment through diverse authors with characters. These specific dystopian novels will encourage creativity and critical thinking as they connect with the characters and their adventures.

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Inspiring imagination and critical thinking against all odds. Do you remember feeling empowered and inspired by a character's call to duty? Especially a character who's story continued into a series! What about the anticipation and excitement of endless possibilities that could happen as you devoured each installment?

My students are insatiable readers with an appetite for new adventures and stories.

I am a middle school English teacher at a 5 to 8 Title 1 middle school. My classroom library is a crucial resource for a majority of my students. Their parents and their children rely on my expertise to encourage high-quality literature by diverse authors.

After the last two years of inconsistent instruction and a looming pandemic that threatens my student's sense of stability, I am hoping to continue to motivate and spark a love for reading.

My Project

Students have been devouring the dystopian genre in my classroom library, specifically dystopian novels such as "The Hunger Games" and "Divergent". With that in mind, I would like these novels to not only teach this popular genre whole class, but also use them as an opportunity of exposure to diverse authors and characters.

It is my responsibility to provide opportunities of literary mirrors and windows for my students.

Stories should enrich imaginations of wonder, as well as reflections of possibilities for all learners.

With these new books, my students will be able to see the impossible become possible. I find it to be my responsibility to choose books that interest them. The best way to increase reading ability is to read more, and these books will continue to help my students grow stronger in reading. My students already have shown an astonishing interest in independent reading, and this project will only help enrich their experiences with the printed word.
