This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I began teaching 25 years ago and taught 5th grade for 15 years. My picture shows a former 5th grade class of mine. Then switched to Social Studies for a myriad of grades along with a remote year of 1st grade. Now I begin a new chapter (pun intended) and will be our school's LIBRARIAN!
I'm now a multi-generational teacher.
I have always tried to have innovative materials to share with my diverse population. However what's missing from making my library the best for my population of kids in East Harlem are books that illustrate my kids themselves!
I teach in a wonderful, yet low socioeconomic area. Since we are a Title I school, we have money for specifics but not for the volume (can't stop the puns today!) of books I need to raise the interest and confidence that I want in my students.
My Project
I happened upon this amazing website called Mahogany. They sell books for black and brown children of all ages.
Our current library is full of books, but most are not books w/my student population in mind.
I'm in the process of weeding through viable books within my current library and hoping to fill it up with loads of new and exciting books for all of my kids (we flow from 3K to 8th grade, so that's a tall order!)
The students will be able to take out books and read at home (hopefully even to their parents and siblings) and do the ubiquitous book reports for their classroom teacher. They probably would love to do it with all of these new books I'm hoping to get!
