My Students

Our students from Rochester, MN are part of a program called CLOS. CLOS stands for “Creative Learning Opportunities for Students.” The CLOS program is designed for students who benefit from being in a smaller setting within a large middle school. We currently have 1100+ students in our building and students have seven different teachers throughout the day.

The CLOS program offers a “school within a school” environment.

The program is made up of 22 7th and 8th-grade students and two teachers. As teachers, we provide structure, individualized learning targets, and a positive support system for each student. Our students feel confident, eager, and excited to learn new skills each day. We admire their thirst for knowledge, desire and drive, and resiliency. They truly are an incredible group, we are so lucky and thankful to be their teachers.

My Project

Students need a variety of experiences to enhance their learning. In today's world, funding for school field trip seems almost impossible. Teachers and students need to take learning outside their classroom to provide meaningful learning beyond a textbook or screen. Taking students to the MN Zoo provides them with an opportunity that they might not otherwise have. It strengthens relationships with students in our classroom, makes them think deeper about what they are learning, provides motivation to learn everything they possibly can about their animal, and ultimately makes a lasting positive memory about a research project they completed during the school year.
