Minimize Auditory Distractions for Struggling Readers
Help me give my students hearing protection to minimize auditory distractions. Many students struggle to maintain focus, but I recently brought some of my husband's Navy-issued hearing protection to try with a couple students. The results were fantastic.

My Students
I work in a Dual Language School in North Central Washington. All students learn to read, write, and speak in both English and Spanish. Many families are hard-working in agriculture and struggle to adequately support their children academically--especially with the increasingly challenging and rigorous curriculum they are expected to master.
Approximately 80% of our students fall below the poverty line, and participation in or access to the arts is extremely limited.
I work with struggling readers. Students' needs range from basic phonemic awareness and phonics to high frequency words, vocabulary, and comprehension. I see 9 groups of 12 students (10 students for kindergarten) each day and aim to meet their individual instructional needs. My students and I set gutsy goals and work hard to achieve them!
My Project
I work in a classroom with 2 reading specialists and 2 paraeducators, so we have up to 30 people in our room at any given time. All students come to our room because they need extra support in reading, but with all of the noise, it can be extremely difficult for some students to focus and do their best. I used hearing protection for a couple of students and saw amazing results due to their increased ability to focus on the text and not be distracted by all of the noises in the classroom. I decided to try using it with all of my students for one assessment, and 92 out of 96 students showed significant growth. Sixteen students exclaimed how they felt like they were in a room all by themselves. One said, "It was so quiet, it was like being in my room and reading." Another said, "This is so good. I'm going to make my mom buy me some of these!" Having a set of these noise canceling headphones will be a fantastic addition to my classroom. I look forward to seeing more incredible results using this accommodation in my classroom!
