Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students walk in ready and excited for what is in store for them that day. I often will ask throughout the day "Who is ready for a challenge?" and am greeted by raised voices and hands saying "Me, me!" I respond with "'Mimi' isn't here, but I'm glad to see we are ready for more!"

We enjoy our time together, laughing, learning and taking on ever greater challenges.

Our classroom has English Learners coming from South America, Central America, Eastern Europe and Asia, from diverse cultural and socio-economic backgrounds. Though English is often not the students' nor the parents' first language, we all share in our school's vision and commitment to great learning in a safe and friendly school environment. Our school community prides itself in helping others and giving students opportunities to learn using twenty-first century tools that may otherwise be unavailable at home. We are a little school with a limited budget, but we dream big!

My Project

One area my students struggle with is speaking clearly and listening while sharing writing ideas. Since English was not my native language, I know firsthand how hard it is to try and spell new words or have the confidence to ask questions of native peers.

My kindergarten students, or mini reporters, have big dreams and aspire to be on equal footing with the thinkers and talkers from fifth grade.

We need a digital document camera to facilitate shared writing, spelling in a collaborative classroom and some kid-safe volume-limiting headphones to use during computing/research center time, including school happenings and discoveries.
