Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Many of my students have never held a crayon let alone modeled with clay or painted with watercolors. This could be the year they discover their inner Monet, Da Vinci, or Renoir!

My students are from a socioeconomically depressed area.

All of our students receive free and reduced lunch and free breakfast. Teachers rarely have all of the art supplies they need at the beginning of the school year and we do not have the luxury of asking our students' parents to fill in the gaps.

My Project

My students need crayons, colored pencils, oil pastels, and other art materials. Our school is struggling to close the achievement gap and focuses most of its day on language arts and mathematics. In Kindergarten; however, we begin by allowing the students to express their writing through drawings. We typically begin by drawing images then writing about them, and it is way more exciting to create images with a variety of media than to use crayons day after day. My students will be able to find multiple modes of expression through the use of oil pastels, watercolors, and colored pencils which will lead to richer dialogues and writing projects.

My goal is to provide the students with activities that fill them with wonder and inspiration!

Through these feelings they will find words and ideas to put on paper, which will be published on the walls of the classroom and in the pages of student-created books. My hope is that in seeing their work appreciated and celebrated I will inspire my student artists and round out their academic and emotional development.
