it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
We work hard in my classroom to have calm bodies and calm mind. Working on mindfulness is a cornerstone in my classroom, but it does come with some challenges. My students, like most kids, struggle with staying in their seats. Having some alternatives will make the students feel like they have some control over their schooling. Additionally, students who need to get closer to the board will not feel awkward about being at the front of the room, and instead will be excited to have a “special seat.” I have other students who have asked for a wiggle seat and maybe even gotten to borrow one while someone was absent. Their attention improved, but I did not have the resources to make it an every day thing. It would really change my class’s day-to-day being able to received accommodations, without the paperwork or timeline. Students look around and see someone with something they like honestly benefit from and cannot help but feel jealous. I would love to be able to make that an option for other students. Similarly, we treat fidgets and stuff animals the same. I recently learned that some of my students do not have stuffed animals at home, so my classroom is their only chance. If I had a few more, all of those kids to use one during reading time or independent work. Unfortunately, we have had some growing pains along the way, as we learned to respect our classroom and its supplies. I got a few fidgets for the class at the start of the year, not expecting them to be so popular, and they have broken. The options were limited to begin with and I no longer have the quantity to meet my classroom’s needs.
