My stellar human anatomy and physiology students, who are in grades 10-12, attend a rural high school with a 50% rate of free and reduced lunches. The school district, in which we are the only high school, covers the second largest geographic area in the state. Historically, a great number of our students come from farming, ranching and logging families, some of which stretch back for generations. Due to the characteristics of our district, many students have limited access to the advanced science classes and skills used in medical careers.
Our anatomy class is about discovering the ways in which we are exceptional. I strive to offer skills and opportunities that can be applied to their future. I am currently in the process of articulating the human anatomy and physiology course with a university, so that my students may obtain 3 college credits. The knowledge my students build from achieving difficult labs and accomplishing goals is the most beautiful thing of all. A component of this class is the "Mini Me Muscle Manikin Lab" which engages their whole body in the experience. Unfortunately, we have lost our budget and as a result have no funds to purchase the clay and cutting mats for our manikins.
Like my students, I have goals of providing the additional clay and measuring mats for our mere 8 manikins. The clay will allow my students to continue their hands-on learning of the human nervous, cardiovascular, bone and muscle systems. One day, I hope to provide one manikin for every two students for a more realistic mirror of cadaver dissections.
Your help will allow my students to move into a new realm of real world applications, ultimately increasing rigor, engaging untapped creative promise and introducing basic skills used in all medical careers.
Ancora Imparo - I am still learning.
