My students need updated books on the solar system, body & health, world, and weather. We also need more biographies of positive, influential people. Graphic novels help introduce classics to a new generation.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Our students need books! There is no community library in Steelton or Highspire, so the school facilities are the primary source of books. In our elementary school, we have approximately 800 students, not including those in Head Start programs. Of that population, 78% of them are designated as economically disadvantaged; 2% are ELL, .51% as gifted, and 17% are special education. Our gender population is about 52% male and 48% female. Enrollment based on ethnicity- 51% African American, 22% Hispanic, 18% white, nearly 8% multi-racial, and less than one percent is either American Indian or Asian.
My students are so eager to get new, current titles; they beg; they demand.
And it's so heartbreaking to have to tell a wide eyed kid that no, we don't have what they want. Their eagerness lags and soon they tire of coming to the library only to be disappointed. Help us make our kids happy. In an age where technology overpowers the written word, literacy wanes and our students fall farther behind when they have such potential to succeed.
My Project
This year, our library collection needed a serious assessment. The diagnosis was that our non-fiction department was lacking some luster. We are in need of some updated sets of important topics.
We needed primary readers on the solar system, the body and health, and care of our world and its creatures.
This will help increase their interest in STEM categories as well as biographies of influential people.
Our library also needs some replenishing in the graphic novel department. We have weak readers who flock to these 'simpler' texts. It introduces them to classic stories and characters.
Helping kids get books, and a tax deduction- how can you lose!?
