My Students
My students are desperate to find a way to communicate with people and to understand the world around them. Numerous research has shown that using an iPad can open up a world to children with Autism that none of us thought was possible.
I have 30 of the most amazing students and together we find ways to learn new things while overcoming Autism, physical disabilities, cognitive impairments, and anything else life throws at them.
We go out into the community for instruction and work on academic and life skills in the classroom. These students love to learn! We work on all subjects using the Access Points curriculum for Florida standards. This means on top of knowing about money, time, home skills and cooking, they know almost all 50 states and their capitals, life cycles of plants, types of clouds, Lewis and Clark and so much more. They amaze me every day!
My Project
My students need an iPad mini in an OtterBox to use in the classroom to access curriculum materials, communication apps, and educational apps for students with Autism. An iPad in our classroom will give many of my students a way to communicate, participate, and access not only the curriculum but also the people in their environment. So much of what we see as "behavior" is simply a failure to communicate or be understood. The portability of these devices will allow us to take it on trips into the community and give students a way to generalize the things we are teaching them.
These materials will be used to incorporate educational apps and access curriculum materials in a manner that will reach our most difficult students. The iPad will be used to increase the communication skills of these students through structured learning activities that will be modeled and shaped into generalized skills for the students' future.
Our school budget has been drastically cut over the past several years.
Our limited resources will not allow us as a school to purchase items such as iPads. Most of these students have never even seen an iPad, so there is no way to know the potential within them that has not been tapped. Not only will the technology encourage these students to learn, but will assist in them making a difference in the future.
