My students LOVE PE class! At our school, I work hard to provide students with a variety of sport activities that can introduce them to something new, and keep them physically fit.
Our students come from a variety of neighborhoods and backgrounds and love learning new games and activities.
Our school is one of the most diverse schools in all of Queens, NY. Being that we are so diverse, I want to provide them with as many opportunities as possible to showcase their skills, while inspiring them to learn new sport activities.
Teaching lifelong leisure activities is my goal because I want my students to take what they learn from PE class and use it later in life. In college and beyond, I hope they can take tidbits of information from volleyball, badminton, or basketball, so that they can participate with friends and family with physical literacy.
My Project
Throughout many of the sport units we practice in PE class, our focus is always skill technique. Often times, students are in stations, where they practice skills in different scenarios while they assess themselves and others. What better way to assess each other than through technology?
Technology can provide immediate visual feedback about a students' physical performance.
Sometimes it is hard for students to understand where they are messing up. My hope is that through the use of an iPad, I can provide students with the opportunity to improve and push their thinking as athletes.
There are many apps available where students can record their skill practice and then immediately watch it back in order to correct themselves. In fact, many of these apps play back the video in slow motion, giving students an even better opportunity to fix common errors or mistakes. As a teacher, I am always giving my students feedback, but for students to actually see themselves perform a skill on a video that they can play back, is powerful data!
