This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

The American Dream is alive in our students, but language barriers can impede motivation. Please help us provide our first graders with the educations they deserve; we need colored folders, pencils, paper, name tags, and sticker dots to help us keep our first grade literacy project organized.

Our school is a Title I school, in a small town with a large Hispanic population.

The students at our school are likewise, primarily 86% Hispanic. The parents of these students are hard workers who are very interested in getting involved but sometimes don't really know how, and they want nothing more than for their children to get a good education and "be somebody". Our students are engaged, excited learners but they are still learning the language, and without access to bilingual support at home, the time we have at school to make necessary connections in literacy is very precious.

My Project

Research shows that English Language Learners learn best through the "SIOP" method where instruction is carefully structured to reinforce the information being learned in 3 different ways: visuals, words, and meaningful context. To provide the most relevant approach to each child's education, our school uses the SIOP method in ability-leveled literacy groupings where each grade level is divided into 4 groups, and then re-grouped into 3 groups according to ability within each of the 4 larger groups. These smaller groups receive reading, writing, and vocabulary instruction in rotations carefully tailored to their abilities and needs. We began this three years ago, and have begun to see results at the end of this school year. In order to continue to provide these learning opportunities, we require some replacement materials for which our school no longer has the funds. We need new folders and stickers for organizing, as well as paper, pencils, and some supplemental materials for writing

My students come from backgrounds of very little hope, and very few chances to succeed.

They are bright children who deserve a chance to share the meaningful ideas they have to contribute, and to make the world a more beautiful, and thoughtful place. It is the impossible dream without tough skins, hard work, and dedication; but with your belief that they deserve that chance, and with your help and the help of others like you, they will have every opportunity to try - to live the American Dream.
