I need professional training and supplies to implement a school wide mindfulness/yoga initiative to address our students social/emotional needs.

My Students

Our students come from a wide variety of home environments- most are very poor and many are from broken homes. Some students suffered greatly during the COVID-19 crisis, while others are bouncing back quickly from the rapid changes that we're seeing in our world.

Although we are a Magnet school, what we've seen is that our students are not as resilient as we thought they would be.

They are academically behind by several grades in reading, writing and mathematics. In the specialists' areas (like my own), our students have been disproportionately affected by the COVID pandemic because so much of what we do can't be translated into a digital platform.

Our school is in the Historic Westside of Las Vegas, the first architecturally-planned neighborhood for African-Americans in the Western United States. Our students are 100% free lunch, and approximately 50% African-American/50% Hispanic. Even though they are from a tough background, we have a tight-knit community.

What our students need is more connection, with themselves as human beings and with their peers. This is what they lacked for almost 2 school years!

My Project

The professional development and supplies from Calming Kids® will directly address our students' needs for social/emotional learning.

I will use the training and supplies to provide students with a better understanding of how to use silence, reflection, stretching and calm breathing to control their emotions.

I have implemented some of this in a non-traditional manner in my music classroom already, but I need help to launch this on our campus on a wider, more professional scale. I'd like to be able to provide something for each classroom teacher to post in their own rooms and be a campus resource to those who need strategies to help our students combat their feelings in our uncertain times.
