Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are funny and smart. My class is diverse, and there are many students whose first language is not English. They love exploring and being creative in their learning. Some of their favorite things to do are STEM activities and, of course, art. I have some of the most creative first graders! They also love being read to!

Nelson Mandela once said, "Education is the most important weapon which you can use to change the world."

In addition to teaching my students the core content, I am trying to teach them that education is powerful, that it will get them anywhere they want to go, and that it will help them to change the world.

My Project

In March of 2020, when schools shut down, it really put a damper on things. So many students were struggling academically as well as emotionally. A few days later, when Utah had the earthquake kids were even more anxious and nervous about life. Fast forward to when we returned to school, teachers were faced with helping students through lots of trauma and not a lot of training on how to help. Over the last couple of years, I have learned that teaching mindfulness is a great way to help students cope with and manage their feelings in an appropriate and safe way. The bubbles and popits being requested in this project will be used in our calm corner, students will use them when they need to take a break from the every day stresses of learning and life. The liquid sensory windows will also be used in our calm corner as a way for students to check out and decompress a little. Art is such a powerful way for students to express themselves and release tension. I am asking for water colors and air dry clay to give to students to use as an outlet when they need to release or express emotions they don't know how to talk about. I am also asking for a variety of books to read to students to help teach them positive, healthy ways to manage and cope with their feelings.

When students feel loved, seen and heard they are better able to learn and concentrate on school related tasks.

Teaching students to manage their feelings and stresses after this pandemic is high on my priority list. I want my students to walk away from first grade with the skills necessary to be a happy, productive member of society.
