Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am bilingual school counselor in an urban setting. My students come to school with a variety of different life experiences. Some may have gone through adverse experiences that have impacted their sense of safety and/or well being and their ability to sustain attention in school to succeed. Others may experience academic struggles and have limited support from adults at home due to various factors.
As soon as they walk through our doors they may have had a challenging morning already.
They may have not been able to eat a healthy breakfast, but they come to school where they can eat breakfast (many of our students qualify for free or reduced meals) before starting their school day and it's a safe, comfortable environment in which we care about their success as a whole child.
Every day that I work with our students I know that they have the potential to grow as learners and to develop strong social emotional skills that will help them to problem solve, demonstrate empathy for others, regulate their emotions in healthy ways, challenge themselves to have a growth mindset and be kind and caring individuals of our community.
My Project
I will be using the books to teach students in the classroom setting and in small groups so that students can learn strategies to regulate their emotions in healthy ways.
Students need modeling and guided practice on how to identify their emotions through sensations in their body, how to pause/stop and then think of strategies to use to calm their bodies so they are ready to problem solve and make safe, respectful, and responsible choices.
I will also teach students ways how we can move from a fixed mindset to developing a growth mindset, this will also help build their self esteem and motivation as a learner. Students with high levels of frustration or low self confidence and low self esteem tend to have negative attitudes about themselves and do not believe they have the ability to grow/develop their skills. Using these books will aid in having discussions around how we can shift or re-frame our negative/fixed thinking patterns to positive/growth mindset patterns in which students can believe they have the ability to work hard, train their brain, and develop skills over time through perseverance, support and effort.
The music CD's will be used in the class to practice mindfulness throughout the day in school. Supplies like the glitter glue will be used to make calming bottles that students can use in a calming area as a way to self regulate. They can shake the calming bottle, pay attention to the glitter as it settles to the bottom while taking deep breaths to calm themselves. The bubble timers can be used in a similar ways to help students pause, refocus their attention and/or calm themselves by doing mindful breathing. The books and supplies will be used to encourage students to practice being mindful and develop a growth mindset.
