Mindfulness and Meditation Technology in New Orleans Classrooms

Help me give my students practice with developing their coping skills by providing them with assistive technology for meditation practices. The Muse brainwave band and a class iPad will help us to do this.

My Students

I teach 5th grade students in a Montessori inspired school in New Orleans. My students are creative, passionate, and incredibly curious about the world around them. Students come to my classroom from a variety of backgrounds with a very diverse range of experiences.

My teaching philosophy is to equip my students with the skills necessary for both academic success and opportunity, as well as the social and emotional skills necessary for happy, fulfilling lives and relationships beyond the classroom.

On a typical day in my classroom, you will find students working on a variety of works that are tailored to their specific skill level and need. One student may be seated on the floor with dice and beads, exploring place value by creating visual models of multi digit numbers, while another student may be seated at a low stool with batteries, wires, and light bulbs, discovering electric circuits. This ability to choose and explore topics has fostered a love of learning in my students, and empowers them to think beyond the classroom. We also begin and end each day with meditative practices that ground us in the present as well as community meetings to develop our social and emotional intelligences.

My Project

These tools will give students instant feedback on their meditation practices. Students in an emotionally escalated state can use this technology as a means of calming themselves using real time feedback to develop their emotional intelligence. This will allow students to recognize when they need to take time for themselves to calm down and recenter before reacting to a situation. This type of technology has the power to significantly decrease the number of times students need to be removed from class as a consequence for reacting before calming themselves and thinking through their response. My hope is that these skills will continue to grow and develop in students' lives outside of school. New Orleans has one of the highest violent crime rates in the country. Our city is in desperate need of interventions that will begin to change this unsettling statistic. I believe this change begins with our students, as they are the next generation of this community. They hold the power to transform our city from one of the most violent places in the country to one that leads the way in emotional and social intelligence.
