Having the freedom to move and feel comfortable in the classroom environment is critical for student engagement. My students need to use their energy for learning, growing, and exploring- not focusing on how uncomfortable their body feels sitting still in a desk for 8 hours. Children need to move, and ignoring or restricting that need moves us further away from a child centered classroom. Flexible seating options would allow me to maximize the amount of time my students spend on learning tasks and would help to engage even my most wiggly learners. The flexible seating options I am asking for are soft cushions, wiggle cushions, low stools, and balance balls. These seating options would help engage my students during our daily community meetings, independent math and science work cycles, STEM projects, and small group lessons gathered on rugs/ low tables around our classroom.
