Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Our students are a diverse group of individuals who bring unique perspectives and experiences to the classroom. Many face challenges outside of school, and providing them with the opportunity to engage in physical activities like yoga, pilates, and weightlifting can be transformative.

Our middle schoolers are eager to take charge of their health and fitness.

By integrating these practices, we aim to cultivate resilience, self-discipline, and confidence—qualities that will serve them well both inside and outside the classroom.

Yoga Mats: Having dedicated mats will provide a comfortable and safe space for students to practice yoga and pilates. This will encourage participation, as students will feel more at ease while learning new poses and techniques. A designated space also fosters a sense of ownership and commitment to their practice.

Foam Rollers: Foam rollers are essential for recovery and muscle care. They teach students about self-myofascial release, which can help prevent injuries and enhance performance. By incorporating foam rolling into our curriculum, students will learn the importance of post-exercise recovery, which is vital for lifelong fitness habits.

PVC Pipe Barbells: Using PVC pipe barbells allows students to learn Olympic weightlifting techniques safely. These lightweight bars enable them to practice proper form without the risk of injury. This foundational skill is crucial, as it sets the stage for future strength training and helps build confidence in their abilities.

Goals for This Project

Our primary goals for integrating yoga, pilates, and Olympic weightlifting into the curriculum are:

Increase Physical Literacy: By exposing students to a variety of physical activities, we aim to improve their overall fitness levels and encourage lifelong engagement in exercise.

Promote Mindfulness and Mental Well-being: Incorporating yoga and pilates will teach students mindfulness practices that can help reduce stress and improve focus, benefiting their academic performance as well.
