This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Our students are 6th, 7th, and 8th graders at middle schools in Washington Township.
Washington Township is a diverse school district with students and staff from all walks of life.
MSDWT schools uphold International Baccalaureate approaches, social-emotional learning, and culturally responsive teaching. My role is a Social-Emotional Learning coach where I get to work with students and staff on mindfulness in the classroom and proactive approaches both behaviorally and academically.
MSDWT students thrive with teachers who build strong relationships, incorporate relevant and responsive instruction, and value their holistic development as students and people!
My Project
Social-emotional learning and mindfulness are all the buzz these days. While there is a lot of focus on supporting students, we oftentimes aren't giving enough consideration to the support that teachers need.
Teaching is well-known to be a demanding, stressful, and emotional job, and teachers need support in cultivating mindfulness and emotional-regulation strategies before they can help students self-regulate and build stronger social-emotional skills.
As a mindfulness and social-emotional learning coach for three middle schools in Washington Township (Indianapolis), I have begun a Mindful Teachers cohort in all schools. I would like resources to better support teachers in building their own mindfulness and self-awareness practices.
