This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach an extremely diverse group of students that come from all over the state, country, and even world. All of them are eager and capable of learning despite the differences that we face on a daily basis.

My students come from a low-income district and are often told "no" or "that's out of the budget" when they ask about supplies or resources that many other schools and students take for granted.

It is frustrating that the students are aware that they should have more but don't. We work together to make the best out of every situation but sometimes it is just not enough.

My Project

This year I have been incorporating mindfulness practices and activities into my classroom on a regular basis. Students have practiced different breathing exercises and done visualization techniques that they can use in my classroom, other classes, and take with them in their everyday lives. However I am extremely limited to what I can do in the classroom with the resources I currently have. I can really see the practices resonating with some of the students and want to be able to do more with them.

My students come in with so much anxiety and stress from their everyday lives it has been really wonderful to be able to teach them different techniques that they can use to battle these everyday obstacles.

Being able to bring in items like a singing bowl or stress balls will only enhance the mindfulness practice for the students and make them see how important it is to do and learn about. I see students breathing before they start drawing and I would love to be able to do more with them.

I look forward to continuing with mindfulness activities in my classroom this year. Being able to learn new activities and techniques to incorporate will only make the practice better and better. I am noticing that some students are really benefiting from the activities and can't wait to teach them more.
