Mindful Students Focus and Learn!

My Students

The students in my school are a resilient group of kids, growing up in rural, northern New England. They're eager to learn, make friends, and have new experiences. Here, most kids love outdoor activities, playing with friends, joining a team sport, and being with family. For many, though, their opportunities are limited, and the stressors are high. They come from families with busy parents trying to make ends meet and with few resources. Like many other communities across the states, their community struggles with the challenges of low-income & poverty, substance abuse and addiction. More and more, the kids in my school are experiencing stress and even anxiety.

As the school counselor, I strive to instill healthy coping skills in my students, skills that will last a lifetime and help them manage the stresses of everyday life.

This year, I've introduced Mindfulness to many of my classrooms. The students love taking a few minutes to focus their attention on mindful breathing. They especially love listening to the sound of the chime as it resonants and fades, the signal that starts and ends our mindfulness practice. My students say that practicing mindfulness helps them focus, calm down and be happy!

My Project

Mindfulness has a variety of research-backed impacts, including stress reduction, emotional regulation, and focus. When students are focused and relaxed they are available for learning, better able to build positive relationships, and strong enough to weather the ups and downs of childhood.

As my Mindfulness Classes wrap up, (it's been 8 weeks of instruction), the classroom teachers will continue the practice of three mindful breaks during the day.

The ringing of the chime signals the start of mindfulness. Its deep resonating sound helps the students to still their bodies, pay attention to their breathing, and draw themselves into a safe and peaceful place inside. With your help, each class can have a beautiful sounding chime to help them in their mindful practice.
